1. Seven Stories
The National Centre for Children's Books in Newcastle celebrates its seventh birthday this August. Its seven floors are packed with child-centric literature and areas for kids to play, including the attic space, where dressing up and play-acting stories takes place. There are also regular readings from famous authors. 

2. Tennis for Free
This UK charity organises free court time and coaching sessions for kids at locations across the UK. And don't worry if you don't have your own racquet — there are plenty to borrow. 

3. National Play Day
Because it can't ALL be about learning, 1 August sees hundreds of community events at venues nationwide, ranging from picnics on village greens to woodland adventures and the chance to have a go at everything from croquet to archery.

4. British Library
Learn all about its amazing collection of books, folios and papers at a series of free summer workshops taking place several days a week throughout August. 

5. National Trust
Can't afford the steep entrance fees to the UK's stellar National Trust properties? Then sign up for one of hundreds of free family events at estates nationwide. Learn about everything from the Magna Carta to medieval archery with have-a-go session and talks on the longbow.
