La Sultane de Saba Renewing Rose Ritual at Spa London, Wimbledon

The treatments at London's newest public sector day spa are both affordable and indulgent.

As I'm led into the dimly lit wet room and told to lie down on the hard, plastic hammam table, I wonder what I've let myself in for. I'm new to spa treatments and have very sensitive skin, so it suddenly occurs to me this could go horribly wrong. But once I've ungracefully clambered onto the table and my therapist begins to talk me through La Sultane de Saba Renewing Rose Ritual treatment, which uses all natural ingredients, I begin to relax.

At this stage, I've already spent an hour and a half enjoying the facilities at Spa London – the public sector day spas aimed at making spas more accessible to all, by offering luxurious experiences at affordable prices.

At their newest offering, which has just opened in Wimbledon Leisure Centre as part of a £1m investment project, I spent time using a variety of hot and cold treatments as part of the Thermal Spa Experience, including the sauna – recommended to use just before the Rose Ritual – the aroma steam room, hydrotherapy pool, foot baths and – my personal favourite – the hot, tiled hammam bench. I even found time for a quick snooze in the relaxation lounge.

But now in the hammam room, this is what I'm really here for. Starting from my feet and working up, my skin is gently scrubbed with exfoliating La Salt La Saba Black Soap. Made from Moroccan black olives and eucalyptus, the soap's delicious smell immediately fills the room.

With front and back done, I'm rinsed down and it's time for the next round of scrubbing – this time using La Salt La Saba Rose Scrub, which is washed off with cold water poured over me from a bucket – though not too cold. Once this is complete and I'm squeaky clean, my knots are ironed out with a firm full body massage using melted shea butter with rose.

Slathered in the natural moisturiser, my normally dry, troublesome skin feels baby soft, and my shoulders and back no longer tense. I'm just about ready for another nap.
