Brighten up the greyest of days with a relaxing massage.

As days go, I chose a good one to have a massage – the renowned Lake District weather doing what it does best, raining. Soaked to the skin, my tense shoulders visibly lowered as I entered the beautiful Lakeside Hotel, with its floor to ceiling windows providing views of Lake Windermere for guests tucking into full English breakfasts in the cosy lounge or sipping morning tea in the bright conservatory – a room doing a good job of disguising the dreary day.

Tucked away behind reception, the spa is surprisingly generous in size, with an indoor, heated pool and more than a handful of treatment rooms.

“This is the only dedicated Aveda spa in the country,” the spa manager said, leading me to my treatment room after a cup of chilled ginger tea. “We use nothing but Aveda products here.”

Truth be told, when it comes to massages I find it hard to distinguish between them, with little discernable difference in system or technique. But this therapist knew what she was doing, adding a delicate hint of rose to the oil and heating it to ensure a state of total relaxation before pleasantly keeping quiet: a killer combination that within minutes had me on the verge of falling asleep. Leaving an hour later with an armful of Aveda products, a recommendation for a Sunday roast and a smile on my face, the day was looking up.

Traditional Lakeside Massage from £79 for 60 mins.
