01 Bed & Breakfast Studio Kairos
With its four chic-but-simple rooms organised by theme (there's an old-fashioned typewriter in the 'Writer's Room', for example, and a gramophone in the 'Music Room'), this meticulously curated B&B will connect you with Zagreb's past, which you can find just a 10-minute walk away in the Old Town. Doubles from £43. studio-kairos.com

02 Hotel President Pantovcak
Perched on a leafy hill above Britanski Square is this delightful mother-and-son creation. Architect Zoran Vizintin morphed the family home into a swish, seven-room hotel, which mum furnished with art and antiques. Rooms (apart from the Classic Room) are sleek and modern, with private terraces overlooking an orchard. Doubles from £78. president-zagreb.com

03 Hotel Jägerhorn
The oldest of Zagreb's current crop of hotels, with an ideal position — right in the middle of the Old Town, near Ban Jelacic Square. Rooms were renovated in 2011 but have retained a traditional feel — primrose walls and floral curtains — and breakfast is served overlooking the pretty courtyard. Doubles from £62. hotel-jagerhorn.hr

04 Hotel 9
You don't pick a room type here, you pick a colour. White, silver and gold are the available options — all are deliciously bling-tastic affairs, complete with enormous, padded headboards, mirrored walls and colourful Etro toiletries in the marble bathrooms. The location — a mile from the Old Town — is slightly less glamorous, though. Doubles from £70. hotel9.hr
