Rooms under £100: Milan

01 Moxy Hotel
Marriott's first ever hotel for 'millennials' belies its Malpensa Airport location with exceptionally comfortable, compact rooms, photo murals of pretty young things, and a social media live-stream screen in the lobby. The fairly priced, self-service canteen is revelatory for Italy. Unbeatable value, despite the 45-minute ride into town. Rooms from £42.

02 Trovailtempo
This is definitely no ordinary B&B — hotel-level amenities and five-star service are par for the course at this four-room (and single apartment) treasure in the San Siro quarter. The rustic rooms were inspired, apparently, by a verse by French poet Baudelaire, with stripped-back wooden furniture and a mini 'library' in each. Rooms from £63.

03 Brera Apartments
A collection of 40 super-chic flats around the artsy Brera district and beyond, Brera Apartments vary in style and size but all are very well equipped (free wi-fi, flatscreen TVs, Nespresso machines), along with individual draws like freestanding bathtubs, floor-to-ceiling windows and exposed brick walls. Flats from £78.

04 E.C.H.O
Look beyond the baffling name and you'll discover that E.c.ho (that's 'ecological contemporary hotel') is a beacon of cool opposite the Stazione Centrale, mixing stylish rooms with serious eco credentials. The organic-focused restaurant is run by Eataly and the garden overlooks a chapel by Renaissance starchitect Bramante. Rooms from £84.
