The western province of the Czech Republic abounds with variety, from Český Krumlov’s quaint riverside setting and Renaissance castle to the old-world spa towns of Western Bohemia. The European Capital of Culture for 2015, Plzeň, is a great spot for museums and eateries, while the Vysočina Region has more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than anywhere else in the country.

Here, in the heart of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, Chateau Herálec can be found, just an hour’s drive from Prague. Views from the luxury boutique hotel housed in a castle are dominated by forests and pastures blanketed with wild flowers.

The recently renovated 12th-century structure is home to just 19 bedrooms and suites. Each contains unique wallpaper based on paintings from the Vysočina Regional Gallery’s collection.

Restaurant Honoria serves up traditional Czech cuisine with a modern twist, mostly using ingredients sourced from local farms. Diners can pick from the a la carte menu or seasonal six-course tasting menu, paired with specially selected wines.

Guests can explore the 18th-century English-style park surrounding the property, complete with towering red oak and tulip poplars. Alternatively, visitors can choose to simply lounge on the hammocks and sun beds dotted across the grounds. Nordic walking poles and cross bikes are on offer for energetic types, but for those wishing to head to medieval towns a little further afield, travel in style with free hire of a Mercedes-Benz E-Class convertible.

Chateau Herálec’s Spa by L’Occitane makes use of its extraordinary surroundings, with a swimming pool beneath historical arches adorned with a silver mosaic, a whirlpool bath in the castle turret, plus Finnish and herbal saunas and steam room. Spa-goers can book in for an array of massages and beauty therapies using products from the luxurious brand.

Other rooms throughout the castle are available for private hire, including the vast Ancestor’s Hall, Gentlemen’s Lounge and Rose Lounge, the library with a fireplace and the chapel of St Anne — perfect for a wedding or business event.
