Prehistoric sites stud this archipelago in the Mediterranean. Its fossil-filled cliffs are dotted with small villages leading onto sandy beaches, and the clear waters surrounding the Maltese islands of Comino and Gozo provide the ideal conditions for scuba diving. Just north of the capital, St Julian’s was once a small fishing village, but its scenic bay is now lined with five-star hotels. It’s become one of the best spots to eat, shop and drink on the island, not far from the small nightlife enclave of Paceville.

The recently refurbished Hilton Malta overlooks the Portomaso Yacht Marina in St Julian’s, with a complex of restaurants and shops stretching out across the marina. Life moves at a slower pace in this luxurious spot on the island’s coast, just walking distance from Paceville and St Julian’s Bay.

Rooms and suites are decorated in a simple, contemporary Mediterranean style, with some including balconies looking out to the marina or over the azure sea.

An authentic Mediterranean buffet is served under the stars in the Oceana Restaurant, while Thai delicacies are dished up in the hotel’s award-winning Blue Elephant Restaurant, which has been styled to resemble a traditional Thai village, complete with waterfalls and lush greenery. In summer months, guests can dine on the open-air terrace at Merkanti Beach Club Restaurant, just steps from the beach. Cocktails are served in the nautical-themed Quarterdeck Bar overlooking the marina, or surrounded by palm trees with sea views at Aqua Bar. The Vista lobby lounge is a popular spot for afternoon tea, accompanied by gorgeous views from the newly built terrace.

Four outdoor swimming pools, including two paddling pools for children, allow guests to make the most of the sun, while a heated indoor pool, sauna and steam room are ideal for cooler months. Workout classes are held at the modern gym, while tennis and squash are available on the hotel’s courts. Afterwards, guests can soothe aching muscles in the Myoka Five Senses Spa, with a menu of over 80 treatments to choose from.

For the business traveller, meeting rooms are available in the conference centre — a vast space that can host up to 1,330 people.
