Nestled at the base of the Alps in Val d’Isère, Hotel Avenue Lodge is just a three-minute hobble from piste-to-pavement. While its exterior reflects that of a traditional Savoyard-style chalet, the interior boasts a neon-lit bar and contemporary fireplace. Guestrooms are more rustic, with plenty of wood and stone, oversized beds strewn with fur throws, and walls adorned with antlers. Some open onto private balconies from which to enjoy the fresh mountain air, while others feature comfy sofas and spacious bathrooms fitted with flatscreen TVs. All offer the latest mod-cons, including DVD players, and iPod or iPad docking stations can be requested.

The hotel spa should be high on the après-ski to-do list: swim under a canopy of twinkling fairy lights, book a massage in the black-and-red toned treatment rooms, or simply lounge by the poolside fireplace. With a heated indoor pool, a whirlpool bath and two saunas, the spa is the perfect spot to while away whole days in between massages, body treatments and facials. A physiotherapist and osteopath are also on hand for guests suffering after a hard day’s exertion on the slopes.

For some more refined fare following a day of hearty dauphinoise and fondue out on the piste, the Lounge Bar and Restaurant creates a number of tantalising pairings: think caviar and Savoyard meats teamed with Champagnes and fine wines. For an authentic flavour of Alpine dining, guests can browse a seasonal menu featuring classic French haute cuisine created from fresh fish and meat dishes sourced locally. At the seductively-lit bar, cocktails are served up by a roaring fire, or for those guests still feeling peckish, a selection of delicious regional cheeses are on offer.

After a reviving night’s sleep in the exquisitely soft feathered beds, guests can prepare for snow sports by heading to the Killy Sport Ski Service, where friendly, expert staff are on hand to help get skiiers and boarders togged up in all the appropriate gear.

As well as a valet service, the hotel staff are available all hours of the day to ensure that guests have everything they need, whether that’s a towel after a massage or a light room-service breakfast before hitting the slopes.
