Linked to Sweden’s Malmo by the Øresund Bridge, Copenhagen is the jewel in the Nordic crown. Colourful houses line quaint Nyhavn harbour; innovative restaurants presided over by trailblazing chefs pepper the districts (the capital is home to Noma); and chic boutiques stretch down Strøget, one of Europe’s longest pedestrian streets.

While world-class museums showcase nine centuries of history and spots across the city pay tribute to its famous artists and authors, the iconic Hotel d’Angleterre — established in 1755 — has plenty of its own stories to tell. As one of Europe’s oldest grand palace hotels, it’s hosted legendary political, royal and national events. The hotel is in the heart of Copenhagen’s design, shopping and culinary scenes, and is close to the Royal Theatre, Strøget and the Nyhav Canal.

A recent refurb saw the 92 individually decorated rooms and suites decked out with rich textiles in neutral hues, accented with bold prints and handpicked artworks.

The New Nordic culinary culture is prominent at the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant, Marchal, where head chef Andreas Bagh takes his inspiration from the classic French kitchen, focusing on deep flavours, local ingredients and visual expression. After indulging, guests can linger over drinks from the extensive menu (featuring over 160 types of bubbly) at Balthazar, the first Champagne bar in Copenhagen, which sits at the corner of the hotel, near the Old City.

Hotel d’Angleterre’s Amazing Space spa offers a respite from the city, with relaxing music, healthy drinks and aromatherapy scents filling the rooms. A range of Nordic treatments, as well as more traditional therapies, sports massages, reflexology and acupuncture are available, plus beauty treatments — all complemented by the spa’s own line of sustainable luxury products. There’s the chance to partake in body-balance classes and receive dietary advice, plus swim in Copenhagen’s only inner-city hotel pool and use the state-of-the-art fitness room. Alternatively, guests can head outdoors to explore the city on bikes supplied by the hotel or via guided trips with Copenhagen Canal Tours.
