This boutique hotel is located within a converted historic townhouse in Spinola Bay, a former fishing village that’s now the centre of Malta’s buzzing entertainment district. Like its surrounding neighbourhood, the Hotel Juliani effortlessly blends city style with Mediterranean charm.

The family-run Hotel Juliani was recently expanded to include a trio of new Designer Suites, a private fitness centre and a business hub within the oldest part of its historic structure. Careful attention was paid to maintain original architectural features, including traditional blue Maltese balconies overlooking the sea. New for 2016, Hotel Juliani has refurbished its rooftop pool and terrace: perched atop cosmopolitan St Julians, this space offers undisturbed sea views and the perfect spot to unwind after a day of work or play.

Arguably the most memorable aspect of Hotel Juliani is its personalised approach. Staff take pride in getting to know each guest and their preferences, giving them insider tips on the best places to visit, from harbour-side restaurants to historic clifftop sites. The hotel endeavours to give guests a taste of its history as well as contemporary culture: such touches include bespoke Maltese ceramics, custom artwork by local artist Pippa Toledo and a library of Maltese arts and culture books in the cafe lounge. What’s more, occasional live musical performances and traditional breakfasts — everything from pastizzi to puddini — give guests a flavour of the region.

For something a little further afield, award-winning Asian fusion restaurant, Zest, takes diners on a culinary journey from Singapore to Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and the Mediterranean. Guests and locals alike rub shoulders in this candy-coloured restaurant, lured in by its flavourful menu, outdoor terrace and bay views. Booking is highly recommended.

With an air of modern elegance, yet still graced by traditional fishing boats bobbing on its sparkling waters, Spinola Bay is an ideal base for exploring the ancient island. This picturesque setting is just a 25-minute drive from the capital city of Valletta, the medieval city of Mdina and Malta International Airport.
