Home to flavourful Cretan cuisine, beautiful landscapes and time-honoured cultural traditions, this sun-soaked island is the perfect summer getaway. Throw in a rich history, mountainside villages and ancient treasures, and it’s easy to see why travellers are enthralled with this beguiling pocket of Greece.

From coral-hued beaches on the sun-bleached north coast to craggy cliffs, hidden coves and rugged canyons etched into southern coastline, Crete is the quintessential Greek island getaway.

Inland, sleepy villages are spread across the foot of rolling peaks and ancient fortresses and frescoed churches rub shoulders with beautifully restored Renaissance mansions. Shady, cobbled streets are lined with kafeneias serving steaming cups of coffee and traditional tavernas, dishing up fresh cheeses, meats and herb-flavoured salads, washed down with local wine and a shot or two of raki.

The hotel
Jutting into the Aegean Sea on its own private peninsula, Out of the Blue Capsis Elite Resort is one of Crete’s hidden gems. Just a short drive from Heraklion, the island’s capital, the award-winning resort borders Agia Pelagia, a quaint fishing village with a famous bay.

Wrapped in its own botanical garden, Out of the Blue, Capsis Elite Resort is home to a rainbow of flowers, fruit, herbs and vegetables, much of which is used in the hotel’s kitchen and spa.

Rooms & suites
Part of the resort’s success is its impressive selection of rooms, starting with the Classic Collection, characterised by boutique bungalows nestled among a riot of brightly coloured flowers and tree-lined pathways. Just steps from the beach, these are perfect for families with children, who can burn off energy in the gardens and the nearby Capsis Minoan Amusement Park and Teenagers’ Club.

At the centre of the resort is the art-inspired Lifestyle Collection (Crystal Energy Hotel), with chic rooms and suites decked out with all the latest mod cons, many with a sea-view balcony or verandah. There’s also the chance to enjoy breakfast in a private area of the hotel — ideal for couples. Elsewhere, overlooking the rocky coastline, is the gated Exclusive Collection (Oh! All Suite Hotel), home to ocean-view suites and villas, many opening onto an al fresco terrace or balcony, some with a whirlpool bath or private pool.

Wine & dine
Guests will never be short of places to eat and drink, from the glass-clad Red Pepper Mediterranean Restaurant — a stylish space with a large terrace and a twinkling canopy of ceiling lights, serving the best local cuisine alongside sea views — to the Seasalt and Rosemary Restaurant, where Greek fare can be savoured in the shade of olive and pine trees.

For a slice of relaxation, the award-winning Euphoria Rejuvenating Spa offers an array of holistic therapies, diet and wellness programmes and health and medical services. On the menu is everything from mind-settling massages to slimming and anti-ageing treatments.

All are designed to balance mind and body, and incorporate nutrition and healthy lifestyle advice. An in-house team of friendly medical professionals and experienced therapists are on hand to offer advice and deliver innovative techniques using state-of-the-art equipment.

With marble columns, a spiral staircase and striking art, the red-and-cream-hued spa is a chic space to spend a lazy afternoon. Elsewhere, there’s a fitness lounge, an indoor pool, sauna and steam room, outdoor exercise areas and a massage pavilion perched above the water on a wooden deck.

The resort has a rich history of excellence, winning the accolade Best Innovation in Terms of Environmental Protection at the 2002 Worldwide Hospitality Awards. Since then, Out of the Blue Capsis Elite Resort has also been awarded a 2008 Star Diamond Award, followed by a certificate of excellence by TripAdvisor in 2013 and 2014. This year, the resort won a silver award at the Greek Tourism Awards in the category of Best Luxury Resort in Greece.

In addition, the Euphoria Rejuvenating Spa snatched the title of Best Greek Spa Resort (in the ‘more than 50 rooms’ category) at the 2015 Spa Traveller Awards. In the same year, the spa was also a runner-up in the Innovation in Wellness category at the Worldwide Hospitality Awards.

There’s plenty to keep younger travellers entertained, including the 4,000sq metre Capsis Minoan Amusement Park — the only one in Greece that features activities based on ancient Greek myths and legends. Ideal for four- to 12-year-olds, kids will be kept amused for hours with a clever mix of fun and educational interactive games.

Elsewhere, the Capsis Teenagers Club is a perfect getaway that’s designed to hold teens’ interests and is ideal for children from 11 to 17 years old. There are also creche facilities for babies and toddlers.
