Perched atop Mount Bürgenberg, a lofty 1,640ft above Lake Lucerne, the Bürgenstock Alpine Spa is one of the largest wellness facilities in Europe. Part of the iconic Bürgenstock Resort, the 10,000sq metre spa offers sweeping lake and mountain views, particularly from its private garden and three pools — a heritage-protected outdoor pool, an al fresco heated infinity pool and an indoor pool.

Inside, sprawling interiors are home to a sauna complex that takes spa-goers from an aromatic steam bath to a Turkish hammam, Kneipp hydrotherapy and whirlpool baths, plus a separate women-only area. There are 15 therapy rooms and three private spa suites for wellness programmes, massages and other beauty therapies. There’s also a hairdressers and a manicure and pedicure salon.

Fitness fiends can work out day or night in the 24-hour gym, filled with the latest stamina and cardio machines, or pick from the extensive group class timetable, from body pump to yoga. Alternatively, there’s a nine-hole alpine golf course, three pro-level tennis courts (two are indoors for poor weather), 40 miles of hiking and biking trails and winter curling.

A revolutionary medical centre is found at the Waldhotel – Healthy Living. Utilising the excellence reputation of Swiss medicine, an elite team offer extraordinary levels of care for post-operative recovery, burnout, physiotherapy and weight-loss amongst other areas, with an integrated spa.

First established in 1873, the car-free resort comprises 30 buildings, including 12 international restaurants, bars and lounges, and 383 rooms and suites across four hotels — the five-star superior Bürgenstock, the five-star Waldhotel – Healthy Living, the four-star superior Palace Hotel and the three-star Taverne.

The resort has hosted such illustrious names as Hollywood stars Audrey Hepburn, Sofia Loren and Sean Connery, and former US President Jimmy Carter — marking it out as a truly world-class destination. Over CHF 500m (£398m) is being invested in renovating the complex, due to be completed in summer 2017.

In addition, a 2,200sq metre conference centre, with 31 light-flooded meeting rooms and lake views, is also under development, set to accommodate more than 800 delegates.
