Chateau Herálec Boutique Hotel and Spa by L’Occitane, Czech Republic

This grande dame, located in the heart of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, is a bastion of tradition and charm

This grande dame, located in the heart of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, is a bastion of tradition and charm. A spectacular castle in a region dominated by deep forests, blooming pastures and breathtaking panoramas, its 19 rooms are full of character, from their soaring arched ceilings to the heavy oak doors — all based on original paintings, which include the landscapes of Vysocina, blackthorn blossoms and abstract depictions of racing horses.

For a taste of old-world hospitality, head to Honoria, the traditional Czech restaurant, with its focus on local and artisanal ingredients — think smoked fish soup, confit duck and pork cheeks with pork belly. The seasonal six-course tasting menu comes with paired wines — dishes include potato ravioli with duck ragu, slow-cooked beef tongue and date cake with caramel sauce. The restaurant’s wine cellar is vast, offering local Moravian wines and one of the largest collections of vintages from Bordeaux in Czech Republic.

Elsewhere, the L’Occitane Spa is one of the stars of this standout property. The first by the popular French beauty brand in the Czech Republic, the spa is a spacious affair, spread across the entire ground floor of the southern wing. Under the original medieval arches lies the indoor swimming pool with resting area. There’s also a variety of saunas, as well as a fitness centre to work up a sweat, and the whirlpool bath in the castle turret for easing aching limbs.

Top treatments include the Relaxing Aromachologie Massage, the Re-energizing Sun Stones and the Shea Fabulous Face & Body Massage. Also top of the treatment list is the Chateau Herálec Rose Body Treatment for Her, and the Verbena Deep Tissue Intense Relief for Him.

Beyond the castle’s imposing doors, head into the surrounding English Park for a romantic stroll or a light jog. If the sun’s shining, it makes for a charming spot for a picnic with food from the hotel’s restaurant. Looking to explore beyond the turrets and towers? Get behind the wheel of the hotel’s Mercedes-Benz E convertible — it’s free to hire — and make a beeline for the region’s medieval towns and historic sights.
