From Barcelona with its cosmopolitan allure to the Costa Brava’s iconic stretch of coastline, Catalonia’s unwavering popularity is well-deserved. Its natural bounty has inspired a swathe of Michelin-starred chefs in the region, too — Roca brothers Joan, Josep and Jordi first found their inspiration in its fertile, arable lands. And it continues to attract young talent; Hostal de la Gavina is home to the showcase restaurant of Romain Fornell, the world’s youngest chef to receive a Michelin star.

Located 95km north of Barcelona, the Hostal de la Gavina sits atop a rocky promontory in the legendary enclave of S’Agaró in the heart of Costa Brava. This luxurious landmark is the only five-star resort in Catalonia and firmly places gastronomy at the forefront of the guest experience, with six indulgent eateries.

Its 74 rooms and suites are distinct, with styles ranging from Mediterranean to Elizabethan, while design accents such as Venetian Murano lamps and silk upholstery guarantee guests an opulent experience during their stay. Since its beginnings in the early 1930s, the hotel has retained a relaxed, homely feel, keeping the atmosphere romantic and authentic.

While away the hours at the Spa by Valmont, where signature therapies, including the Vitality of the Glaciers facial, rejuvenates tired complexions using cellular renewal boosters. Another regimen to look out for is the Princess Pan Dei treatment, which harnesses solar power to soothe and regenerate fragile skin.

The two-floor space features a heated pool, whirlpool bath, hammam, sauna and relaxation area, and the extensive menu boasts treatments from as far afield as Hawaii and Thailand. The Technogym and nearby tennis courts are on hand to give energetic guests a good workout.

Outside the spa, La Gavina’s open-air saltwater swimming pool is the only one of its kind on the Costa Brava, boasting views across the crystalline waters. The hotel’s 2,200sq metres of gardens offer the chance to sunbathe in total privacy, while guests can also take a pleasant stroll down to the beach and the traditional S’Agaró Baths.
