Situated in Vila Nova de Cerveira, a riverside village in the north of Portugal, Hotel Minho is a sleek vision in glass and wood — all the more striking for its backdrop of forested hills. Arriving at Hotel Minho, guests soon learn why the property has been awarded the ‘Silver A’ Design Award in Hospitality, Recreation, Travel and Tourism Design. Sharp lines, cube-like architecture and a two-tone facade greet travellers, while the innovative design continues through the 60 rooms and five suites — the latter each evoking the style of a particular artist, from the quirky Andy Warhol suite to the moody shades of Almada Negreiros.

However, the temptations of Hotel Minho’s spa should be enough to draw guests away, and into treatment rooms where local ingredients are weaved into therapies — standouts include a signature honey massage, a barrel bath filled with nourishing extracts such as vine leaves, and an anti-stress ritual with warm grape seed bags. But that’s just the tip of the wellness iceberg: there are also body wraps, scrubs, massages, facials and balneotherapy on the vast menu. Post-treatment, there’s the chance to unwind in the indoor pool, whirlpool bath, Turkish steam room, sauna and Vichy shower.

The hotel’s restaurant, Braseirão do Minho, serves up traditional regional specialities, including bacalhau (cod) and rojões (seasoned, tender pork loin). Lingering in the wine bar and enjoying a glass of local alvarinho wine is a must; its fresh, floral notes revered the world over.

The wonders of this pocket of the Iberian Peninsula are many and varied, with a guided walk or a food-based tour just two ways to soak up the natural diversity of Alto Minho. Hotel Minho’s prime location on the Spanish border makes it a perfect base for exploring an area of northern Portugal deeply influenced by neighbouring Galicia. The rolling landscape rewards hikers with spectacular valley views, and history abounds in local villages like Vila Nova de Cerveira. Further afield, two cornerstones of Catholic history — Braga and Santiago de Compostela, across the border — demand a visit.
