Set amid the glorious countryside of northeastern Poland, five-star Hotel SPA Dr Irena Eris Wzgórza Dylewskie is a tranquil woodland retreat. The hotel’s floor-to-ceiling windows overlook a postcard-pretty mix of rolling hills, verdant forest and wild flowers. A tangle of nature trails are ripe for exploration on foot, horseback or by bike — one must-visit destination is the heritage park in Olsztynek. Alternatively, admire the many weirs of the Elblag canal, a short hop from the hotel.

Inside, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with spacious interiors bathed in natural light, cosy wood panelling and open fireplaces, and friendly, attentive staff. The 88 guest rooms and suites offer a mix of classic design and modern comforts. Larger groups of friends can take over the nine-bedroom Forest House, while families may prefer one of 11 luxury villas.

Keen spa-goers can take their pick from an array of beauty therapies: slimming, anti-ageing and skincare programmes; aesthetic treatments; plus a collection of massage options, including oriental varieties such as Thai and Balinese. But relaxation isn’t just confined to the treatment rooms: post-massage, head straight to one of the spa’s two swimming pools or its whirlpool bath. There’s also a circuit that includes four types of heat experiences — Finnish sauna, steam bath, caldarium and herbal thermarium — and a hot tub on the outdoor terrace, where guests can wallow among the bubbles while soaking up views of the surrounding woods.

Then make a beeline for Romantyczna restaurant, which comes with the esteemed recommendation of the Slow Food Polska organisation. Here, local delicacies can be sampled and washed down with a glass of the finest wine, safe in the knowledge that dishes are prepared using only the freshest, highest-quality organic produce from the region.

A member of the International SPA Association, the hotel holds the Premium Quality certificate from Deutscher Wellness Verband (German Wellness Association) and was the winner of the Traveller’s Choice Award 2013 in the category of 25 Luxury Hotels in Poland.
