Kanuhura has reopened its doors after a year of renovations. Expect a stylish retreat, where natural materials and soft, clean lines come to the fore. Dive among incredible marine life during a PADI certification course; come face-to-face with turtles and creatures of the deep while snorkelling the house reef; set sail and hop between local islands; or simply snap away for pinch-yourself postcard memoirs from your beachside seat. For serious seclusion, there’s Jehunuhura, Kanuhura’s exclusive island, which guests can escape to for long, languid lunches at the Drift restaurant or for a private picnic experience.

For first-class pampering, head to the serene Kokaa Spa. Combining skincare products by VOYA, Subtle Energies and Terre D’Afrique, the spa houses treatment rooms for singles and couples, plus whirlpool baths, cold plunge pools, sauna, spa boutique, fitness centre and aerobics studio. Highlights include the Crystal Massage and World Journey treatments. And for a treatment with an exotic edge, head to the spa’s beach pavilion, where guests can be massaged in the breezy open air. Professional yoga, pilates and mediation sessions are held here, and qualified fitness instructors are on hand to put guests through their paces.

After a session at the spa, dive into the cool blue and swim in the company of turtles and tropical fish, or retire to one of the 80 villas; options include abodes with private plunge pools and bungalows with beautiful ocean views.

When it comes to food, Kanuhura has 10 restaurants to choose from. Book a table at A Mano for pan-Asian and international dishes; Bottega serves up classic Italian, while Fogo puts the spotlight on Brazilian cuisine on the beach. Elsewhere, guests can pull up a chair at the Chef’s Herb Garden, tucking into open-air cooking using fresh herbs and vegetables, or take their pick of fusion cuisine at Dagas in the midst of swaying palms. And then there’s Dhoni — it doesn’t get much more exclusive than a meal on this Maldivian vessel. Think fresh oysters, caviar, barbequed lobster and Champagne, all enjoyed while drifting on the calm seas.
