Sitting in Slovenia’s coastal town of Portoroz, ebbed by the deep blue Mediterranean and surrounded by verdant countryside, the new five-star Hotel Slovenija takes full advantage of the region’s healing mud and thermal waters.

Proving good taste never goes out of style, Portoroz’s repute as a health resort stretches back centuries — it was here in the 13th century, monks from a Benedictine monastery healed patients with local medicinal elements of the Secovlje Salt Pans (salt pan mud, brine and salt). This was the beginnings of thalassotherapy in Portoroz.

It’s located in a region abounding with the sources of natural remedies, from the nearby 700-year-old Secovlje Salt Pans to thermal prehistoric seawater, which forms the basis of treatments for a variety of conditions such as rheumatism, ascites, lymphadenitis, obesity and common wounds.

LifeClass Hotels & Spa is a unique spa resort with six hotels and seven wellness centres. Hotel Slovenija features 144 contemporary and stylish rooms with a soothing grey-and-white colour scheme and cosy armchairs. There’s a gorgeous free-standing bath in the Family Room, while the Junior Suite boasts views of the sea and port.

It’s the state-of-the-art spa, though, that takes star billing here, with a focus on preserving the 800-year-old tradition of alternative medicine and thalassotherapy. Looking to work up a sweat? Book into the LifeFit Fitness Centre for group exercise classes or personal training sessions.

When it comes to saunas, the spa excels, with seven different types of sauna. Elsewhere, swimmers will love the two pool complexes — one containing heated seawater, the other thermal mineral waters stretching back 42,000 years. The lengthy treatment menu features anti-ageing treatments, ayurvedic detoxification, weight-loss, thalassotherapy for beauty and rehabilitation, integrative approaches to Chinese medicine and traditional Thai medicine.

As evening descends, head to one of the hotel’s two restaurants — TreeTop, with its inventive and healthy menu, and Istrian Tapas, a hip and buzzing spot for modern Istrian cuisine.
