The Molitor is an extraordinary vision — from its centrepiece pools where the bikini was launched in 1946 to its restored art deco stained-glass

The Molitor is an extraordinary vision — from its centrepiece pools where the bikini was launched in 1946 to its restored art deco stained-glass. The legendary main pool, which opened in 1929, was once the most famous in Paris, a favoured haunt of artists, writers and film stars.

Today, this avant-garde property is still all about the pools. Following an extensive renovation in 2014, the art deco stained-glass is back to its former glory, while specially-commissioned graffiti is a nod to its former life as an urban art haven in the 1990s. Pull up a lounger beside the outdoor (summer) pool and dig your toes into the pockets of sand surrounding it. The pool is heated year-round, while the winter pool is sheltered by a huge glass roof — so no excuses.

Each of the 104 rooms and 20 suites overlooks the outdoor pool, with its distinctive yellow facade. They’re sleek and stylish — expect Bose dock stations, Clarins bathroom products, walk-in showers and retro-chic chairs.

Elsewhere, the gargantuan Clarins Spa will excite even the most jaded of spa-goers — it’s super swish, with art deco tiles, circular mirrors and more of the colourful retro chairs. Inside, there are 13 booths, including two vast suites, steam rooms, saunas and a lounge for pre-treatment teas.

The spa focuses on teaching guests to integrate new habits into their lifestyle, to enhance overall health, improve energy levels and balance body and mind. The bilingual staff are handpicked experts in a range of fields, from nutrition and coaching to osteopathy and psychology. As evening descends, head to the rooftop bar — tranquil by day, buzzing by night — for drinks with a view of the Eiffel Tower — before tucking into fine French fare at the restaurant, where renowned head chef Julien Mercier presides over the kitchen.

And while life at the hotel is enthralling enough, the City of Lights awaits beyond the gilded doors of the Molitor, with renowned shopping areas such as Auteuil and Passy, as well as Roland Garros, the Parc des Princes and the Bois de Boulogne all close at hand.
