Summer Island Maldives is a chic Indian Ocean hideaway — think breezy, open-air rooms with the turquoise ocean just metres away. From The Summer House’s bubbling whirlpool bath and the Water Villas, where guests can dangle their feet in the tranquil lagoon, to the Premium Beach Villa, with steps leading to the flour-soft sand — all rooms exude understated elegance.

When guests aren’t taking time out in their rooms, the Firuma Spa is a luxurious place to linger. Translated as ‘healing touch’ in the local Dhivehi language, it’s pitched above the lagoon with magnificent sea views, five spacious treatment rooms (including two couple’s massage rooms), steam rooms, and a lounge to recline in.

Highlights include the Sun Lovers three-day package, incorporating a herbal body scrub, an after-sun cucumber wrap and a rehydrating coconut juice and tropical fruit platter. Meanwhile, Island Indulgence includes a honey and sesame body glow, full-body massage and honey and cucumber facial.

Nature buffs will relish floating in the ocean with a snorkel exploring the kaleidoscopic reef teeming with tropical fish, turtles and dolphins. It’s a great place to dive, for beginners and pros alike, with some of the world’s clearest water, fascinating marine life and intriguing shipwrecks to explore.

There are plenty of ways to cast off on the ocean too, from paddleboarding and canoeing to catamaran trips, or, for some added adrenalin, a banana boat ride. And when it comes to dining, Summer Island Maldives dishes up a faultless menu in its three restaurants. The resort recently won ‘Outstanding Dining Venue’ at the 2016 Global Gourmet Chef par Excellence World Culinaire Competition, and head chef Jack Tiang was named in the ‘Top 50 Outstanding Chefs’.

Head to Samuga for international flavours, Nevi for sundowners and sand between the toes, and Hiya, an over-water restaurant with dreamy ocean views. For the ultimate Maldivian experience, however, indulge in a private candlelit dinner on the beach.
