By National Geographic Traveller The Collection

Alkira Lodge is situated on the brow of Knysna’s Western Head, where ancient mountains meet ever-changing estuaries and the sea. Surrounded by rich indigenous gardens, this tranquil place nurtures the soul, giving guests the opportunity to really sit back, relax and absorb this unique and beautiful region of South Africa.

The lodge blends in with its surroundings, and the private nature reserve helps to preserve many of the rare and endangered fynbos (shrubland) species that form part of the most botanically diverse floral kingdom in the world. It also accommodates and encourages abundant birdlife, as well as a variety of local fauna.

Making stylish use of natural materials, including local wood and stone, the high ceilings, large windows and floating roof of the lodge open onto sweeping views on every side. Guests can look out on rolling hills, the Knysna tidal estuary waters, the Indian Ocean, a whale sanctuary and pristine white beaches, all framed by the majestic Outeniqua Mountains and the infinite African sky beyond.

The lodge uses sunlight and rainwater to minimise its impact on the earth’s fragile environment. Indoor and outdoor spaces for breakfast, dining and lounging give guests a variety of areas in which to soak up the beauty of the Garden Route. Spacious wooden decks, an infinity pool and a heated whirlpool bath ensure a relaxing holiday, warmed by the African sun and surrounded by nature’s beauty. When evening descends, cosy fireplaces and subtle lighting create a warm atmosphere in which to enjoy nature’s fireworks, as the sun sets over the Indian Ocean and the stars of the Milky Way begin to appear.

Alkira is centrally situated, so guests can make the most of easy access to beaches, hiking trails and nature while still being close to both the town of Knysna and the wider Garden Route region. From untamed African wilderness to places to shop and eat, guests are just minutes away from everything they could need.

The lodge only caters for children under 12 if they’re part of a booking for exclusive use of the whole camp.
