Situated on the banks of the Chobe River in Northern Botswana’s Chobe National Park, Bakwena Lodge is an intimate, privately owned eco-haven. The surrounding area plays host to some of the world’s most endangered species, as well as a huge proportion of Botswana’s 200,000 elephants. Guests can expect to enjoy some of the finest game-viewing around.

Fifteen chalets offer a cool and comfortable escape, each one individually designed and decorated to reflect the surrounding environment. The 10 River View Chalets are nestled in the forest on the banks of the river, with private decks offering magnificent vistas across the Chobe River to the plains beyond. Alternatively, guests can choose to stay at one of the five Treetop Chalets, which are elevated on stilts and shaded by the canopy of a tree. The lodge also includes a Family Room, perfect for a family of four, and a Honeymoon Suite.

The chalets’ eco-credentials are impressive. They’ve been built using environmentally friendly materials and methods, which have proven highly effective in terms of thermal regulation — meaning the rooms are cooler in summer and cosier in the winter. All food is sustainably sourced, and the site boasts a natural swimming pool filtered entirely by plants. Lighting, heating and power requirements are drawn from solar technology, and recycling is part of the site’s day-to-day running.

Activities revolve around being fully immersed in the culture and nature of this region in Botswana. Guests can embark on both land- and water-based safaris, as well as a walkabout in a local village; Bakwena is a keen supporter of the local school, and these village tours, either on foot or by bicycle, are encouraged.

Many other pursuits are also available, from fishing trips to guided bicycle tours, all of which are led by experienced and knowledgeable guides. The boat cruises and bike rides are particularly popular; as well as showcasing the stunning surroundings, the route also takes guests to the meeting place of four countries: Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
