Two hours from Cape Town, South Africa’s Cape Whale Coast stretches between Rooiels and Quoin Point, taking in an abundance of wildlife, including whales, sharks and penguins. The villages, bays, coves and valleys along the way offer activities such as wine-tasting, mountain biking and hiking trails. Wedged between the South Atlantic Ocean, the Hermanus Lagoon and the Overberg Mountains sits the hidden gem of Mosaic Private Sanctuary.

The luxury boutique resort is a nature-lover’s paradise in the Overberg region, thought to be one of the best spots for whale-watching and wine-tasting. The resort looks out over miles of tranquil lagoon, while the stone and glass walls of the individual safari lodges open out onto private decks with mountain views.

The chalets at Lagoon Lodge are built using natural stone and thatch from Mosaic in keeping with its conservation ethos. Each chalet is fitted with a separate tub, indoor shower and private outdoor shower.  The wildlife provides a natural soundtrack throughout visitors’ stays here, from the wake-up call of the African fish eagle to the lulling of owls at night.

Located in the centre of the region, Mosaic covers more than 2,500 acres of surrounding conservation land extending to the pristine Walker Bay Beach. Guests can make the most of the area with a host of activities, including 4WD beach excursions, quad biking, boat cruises, kayaking, nature walks and mountain biking.

The rejuvenating Mosaic spa offers massages and skin therapies using natural Rain Africa products. New to the spa are Elemis anti-ageing and advance technology Biotec facials.

Meals and drinks are shared outdoors overlooking the mountains, or inside the glass lodge. Imaginative menus are the result of the creative efforts of the in-house chef, baker, organic gardener and local producers. Breakfasts are hearty, with healthy grains, fresh fruit and daily specials on offer; lunch is served picnic-style around blazing fires; and dinners are created around organic seasonal ingredients. Meals are washed down with glasses of delicious local wines.
