This year, Shamwari Game Reserve is celebrating 25 years of pioneering safaris, conservation and five-star hospitality on the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Perched halfway between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown, this 60,000-acre reserve is steeped in history and is an ideal bolthole for travellers looking for genuine conservation coupled with Big Five wildlife experiences.

Situated along the Bushmans River, the reserve forms a natural extension to the famous Garden Route. One of the largest private game reserves in the Eastern Cape, Shamwari is also among the most successful conservation initiatives in Southern Africa. It’s one of the largest malaria-free Big Five private game reserves in the region, offering distinctive lodges and a seasonal Explorer Camp.

Five compact, luxurious lodges, each with its own distinctive atmosphere and range of facilities, make up the accommodation. Long Lee Manor, Riverdene and Sarili are south of the reserve, while Eagles Crag and Bayethe can be found to the north. Villa Lobengula has six bedrooms and is available for private hire for larger groups and families.

A stay here offers real immersion into South Africa’s wilderness. Adventurous travellers can get stuck into bush experiences on the Explorer Camp, a two-day walking trip echoing the classic tented Safari bush camp; budding photographers can take advantage of the Pro Photo Safari to perfect their photography skills; and visitors can learn about conservation when visiting the Animal Rehabilitation Centre, the Born Free Foundation or the Ian Player Rhino Awareness Centre. The diverse plant, animal and birdlife is supported by the reserve’s five ecosystems (biomes), and personal game rangers are on hand to make sure guests enjoy a truly memorable safari.

As well as a busy schedule of nature-led activities on offer, Shamwari also runs inspiring educational initiatives for children. Younger guests are invited to take part in the Kids on Safari programme, while parents can enjoy a range of relaxation retreats at the spa, designed to awaken the senses and rejuvenate mind, body and soul.
