Sitting on the banks of the Rhine, the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois is located in the heart of Basel, Switzerland’s lively art and design city. Built in 1844, the 101-room hotel reopened its doors in 2006 after an extensive refurbishment. Behind its cream-hued facade lies a unique mix of modern interiors and Belle Epoque grandeur:think oversized chandeliers, gold-crowned marble columns, and sleek, elegant rooms brimming with the latest mod cons.

From bold Neoclassic junior and double rooms, some with views over the river or city centre, to the lime-green Napoleon Suite, with its charming frescoes, elaborate stucco and gilt detailing, rooms are lavishly decorated, without compromising on the latest tech — each is fitted with a Bang & Olufsen flatscreen and heated bathroom floors. The room to book is the 250sq metre Suite Les Trois Rois, resplendent with two bedrooms, three bathrooms and a sitting room with fireplace, opening onto a roof terrace with an al fresco whirlpool bath and panoramic views. Globetrotting gastronomes will be won over by the hotel’s trio of restaurants. Chef Peter Knogl blazes a trail in three-Michelin-starred Cheval Blanc — his classic French haute cuisine shot through with innovative Mediterranean and Asian flourishes. Giving diners magnificent views of the Rhine, Brasserie’s plates of Swiss and French specialities are rustled up using produce from a local market. For delicate canapes washed down with cocktails to a soundtrack of live piano music, head to award-winning Bar Les Trois Rois, where the interiors are as enchanting as the menu: dark wood panelling, leather sofas and velvet cushions; there’s even a water-view terrace for warmer evenings. Run by chef de bar Thomas Huhn, the bar is a cosy spot to linger over a nightcap in front of the roaring, goldrimmed fireplace. For a flavour of Italy, acclaimed Mediterranean restaurant Chez Donati is a five-minute walk from the hotel.

With over 300 years of stories locked within its Baroque walls, the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois is rich in history but young at heart, absorbing the modern glamour of the cosmopolitan city.
