A former residence to the House of Hohenzollern, a dynasty of former princes, electors, kings and emperors, Villa Principe Leopoldo reigns majestically over the southern Swiss city of Lugano. The Hohenzollern was a German noble family that ruled over Prussia from 1701 and all of Germany from 1871. In 1926, the cavalry general Friedrich Leopold used Villa Principe Leopoldo as a summer residence. Illustrious figures from numerous noble European families stayed at the villa until Leopold’s death in 1931. After that, the villa changed hands twice, before it was established as a club. Then, in 1986, it was turned into a hotel.

The villa is located on top of Lugano’s Collina d’Oro (Golden Hill). The surrounding mountains form a circular stage with their reflection in the blue of the lake and the sparkling lights of the banks of the city of Lugano.

Enveloped in the lush vegetation of a natural world soaked by the sun, this boutique hotel offers 37 suites, all of which are airy and decorated with great taste. They’re bright, roomy and comfortable. Luxurious curtains and large, comfy sofas separate the bedroom area from the living room. Bathrooms, with marble panelling and the finest fixtures and fittings, are situated on the side of the corridor. All rooms have a charming balcony which overlook either the garden or the lake.

Guests can enjoy the elegant interior decoration with stuccoes, paintings, objects d’art, antique furniture and oriental carpets in the villa. Tables set with linen tablecloths, silverware and crystal create a wonderful atmosphere for exquisite meals served with a selection of the finest wines.

The cuisine, made with passion and well-sourced local products, offers a taste of Italy, without neglecting regional recipes, classic cuisine or traditional recipes. This cuisine has won numerous awards, thanks to chef Dario Ranza’s masterful touch and the dedication of his skilled team. The restaurant has been praised in important international guides such as Les Grandes Tables and Gault Millau.
