By 1872 River House

Located along the Douro river estuary in northern Portugal, Porto is one of the oldest European city centres. Its historical heart, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, is made up of quaint multicoloured old buildings that almost look as though they have been handmade. There are port cellars on one side of the river, little narrow streets on the other.

1872 River House is located in the Ribeira in the heart of the historic centre. The hotel is a haven for those who wish to be immersed in the city’s daily life.

This is a hotel that’s always ready to welcome those who wish to rest, but also to throw open its doors to those who want to wander around and discover new places.

1872 River House occupies a cosy, guesthouse conversion of a centuries-old, four-storey, stone building. The stylish, light-filled riverfront lounge is the main public area within the hotel, and the perfect spot in which guests can relax on the comfy sofas during the day or enjoy a glass of Portuguese wine in the evening.

There are two rooms on each of the four floors — one river- and one city-facing. Two have shuttered French doors with Juliet balconies facing out over the magnificent Douro. All rooms have their individual quirks and oddities, including a chandelier under the eaves in one, and another with a bed built into an inglenook fireplace.

All rooms are decorated with vintage furniture and traditional glazed tiles; staff place a vase of fresh flowers in each to greet guests on their arrival.

At this hotel, there’s always a place to read a book, to have a drink, to be amazed by the view or to plan the next stroll. And there’s always someone available to offer the best recommendations for things to do around Porto and its surrounding areas. Guests are catered for in all aspects.

1872 River House mixes the tradition of old Porto with the innovation of a city that never stops reinventing itself. And because the city changes everyday, the hotel is constantly changing with it.
