The Garden Lodge is located in the town of Kasane, on the Chobe River in Northern Botswana. The lodge is five minutes by boat from the Chobe National Park and around eight minutes by car.

Each of the 11 rooms have teak and mukwa furniture, a ceiling fan, air conditioning, mosquito nets over the beds and mosquito protection in the windows. Bathrooms are en suite with spacious showers. Eight of the rooms have a private verandah overlooking the Chobe River, while the others overlook the waterfall and pond.

The dining room, under a thatched roof, is open to the swimming pool and garden. There’s an upstairs lounge overlooking the river and a boma under an acacia tree — perfect for afternoon tea. Breakfast is a continental buffet with the option of a cooked meal, too. Lunches are buffet-style with a variety of salads, warm dishes, cheeses and cold meats. Dinner is a set menu where a three course meal is served.

The kitchen staff bake bread daily. All dietary requirements and preferences are catered for. A professional guide joins guests for breakfast to discuss the coming day’s activities.

Between the lodge and riverfront is a lawn area with leafy indigenous trees. Warthogs, mongeese, monitor lizards and other small animals are often seen on the lawn. The trees, shrubs and ornamental plants attract a wide variety of birds.

While relaxing on the verandah, it’s possible to see more than 50 different species of birds. A resident pair of barn owls that have nested in the lodge’s roof for 15 years are often seen perched in the trees at night. Elephants and hippos are also regularly sighted from the lodge at night.

Activities revolve around game viewing, either by car or boat, within Chobe National Park. The park, with its estimated 140,000 elephants, huge herds of buffalos, and almost daily sightings of lions, is a photographer’s dream.

There’s a safari drive in the morning and a boat cruise in the afternoon, according to guests’ requirements. If guests are unlucky enough to not see any elephants, the lodge owners pay for their drinks for the day.
