!Xaus Lodge is a game lodge for eco-tourists and visitors that offers Kalahari-style accommodation. The complex comprises a central lodge building and 12 individual chalets, each with its own deck overlooking a vast saltpan and waterhole. One family unit sleeps four.

The central lodge building consists of a welcoming reception area with its unique wall-hanging made by the ladies of Vezokhule, a sewing co-operative in Upington. The cosy lounge has a fireplace and a library of selected books. The dining area overlooks the pan and contains furniture hand-made in Upington as well as images created by Bushmen artists.

At the art and craft shop, guests can purchase locally made crafts as well as objects made in the wider Kalahari. By day, the swimming pool provides cool relief from the desert heat while at night the large observation deck is a gathering point for guests. Wood is a precious commodity in the Kalahari, so the inviting fire in the boma is made in the traditional method with three or four crossed sticks.

In the en suite chalets, there are flasks of purified drinking water from the desert. Winter sheets and gas heaters provide warmth in the cold nights, while ceiling fans bring relief in the hot months.

Among the activities on offer at the lodge is a guided walk through the surrounding dunes. The local San guide teaches guests to ‘read the newspaper in the sands’, which shows the animals that have passed through, and explains ancient herbal remedies, traditions and legends.

!Xaus Lodge doesn’t just offer comfortable accommodation overlooking a gorgeous salt pan. It’s about more than the generous service and even better food, the friendly staff, or the benefit the local communities derive from it. It isn’t just the stories of guests listening to lions roaring outside their chalets while they lie in bed or the host of responsible tourism awards !Xaus Lodge has won. It’s all those things and something more. !Xaus Lodge is the tranquillity and astonishing beauty that stays with you long after you leave.
