Cantering with zebras across the savannah, galloping across the pampas, swimming through floodwaters adorned with lilies or trotting through vineyards after a wine tasting: there’s no better way to explore a country than from the back of a horse, on an adventure handpicked by the Riding Safari Association.

Cross Kenya’s Maasai Mara on horseback, discovering gorges and valleys, traversing endless plains and dramatic rivers and encountering everything from zebras to elephants and giraffes. From July to October, travellers can also bear witness to the epic wildebeest migration.

In Botswana, adventurous types should look no further than Limpopo Horse Safaris where riders traverse baobab-studded plains, which are home to elephants and cheetah. In the magical Okavango Delta, African Horseback Safaris offers luxurious and exhilarating safaris within this inland delta, famed for large herds of buffalo, elephant and numerous game species.

South Africa’s Horizon Horseback Adventures offers a selection of horses suitable for all ability levels. Journeying through the savannah, riders may pass grazing giraffes or hippos basking in waterholes, and even join herds of zebras. Intrepid types are spoilt for choice, too: swimming on horseback and polocrosse are also on offer.

Excellent wine estates plus an army of expert chefs have put the Cape Winelands on the map as a top foodie destination. The perfect base for discovering the Drakenstein Mountains, Cape Winelands Riding routes weave through orchards and vineyards, with pit stops for wine and cheese tastings on local estates.

Further afield in South America, fabulous pampas riding, wine tastings and refreshing dips in waterfalls within the rolling hills of
the Sierra Chicas of Argentina are available from Estancia Los Potreros. For spectacular trail rides within the dramatic foothills of the Andes mountains and authentic cattle work with the gauchos head to Estancia Huechahue in Patagonia.
