The Luxury Collection 2019

A stone slab around the back of a petrol station on a busy Scottish highway may not immediately scream luxury, but gone are the days when opulence simply meant high-end hotels, private beaches and spa treatments. Today, we want more from travel; a meaningful experience that broadens both our horizons and our minds.

This issue of The Collection focuses on the shifting landscape of luxury travel, taking in experiences from skiing one of the world’s last great wildernesses to exploring little-known Scottish sites like the grave of King Duncan — immortalised in Shakespeare’s Macbeth, hidden behind a Shell garage.

We also delve into the notion of philanthropic travel, exploring just how positive our impact can be on the planet if we choose certain types of trips — low-carbon cruises, for example, or conservation work in Kenya.

And in a nod to the more traditional trappings of luxury travel, we reveal the hottest restaurant reservations from across the globe and look at the incredible improvements in infrastructure, from all-star airports to state-of-the-art trains. After all, they do say the journey is as important as the destination.

There’s also our annual round-up of resorts, hotels, lodges and cruises, brought by our advertising partners, to inspire you to book your next trip.
