Maria Saponari, a researcher at the CNR in Bari, searches for answers for how to fight Xylella.
Giovanni and Daniela Melcarne, seen here with their daughter Daria at their olive mill in Gagliano del Capo, are working with scientists to find olive cultivars resistant to Xylella.
Most of the olive orchards near Bari are still untouched by Xylella. But will they survive in the future?
This olive tree near Ostiche is several hundred years old.
Scientists and growers are trying to find olive cultivars resistant to the devastating Xylella so they can replace the dead and dying trees. They've found a few promising options, but they need to see whether the oil made from the new cultivars tastes good. These vials are filled with oil from several new cultivars, which growers will test for taste and other signs of quality.
Young olives grow in a greenhouse at the CNR in Bari. These trees have been intentionally infected with Xylella so scientists can learn how the disease progresses. The infected trees are carefully controlled.
