Eric Larsen
To conserve energy, Larsen and Waters sometimes rafted their sleds together to cross open water so only one person had to swim.
Sometimes Larsen and Ryan Waters had no choice but to follow what solid ice they could find, even if it meant veering off course.
Young ice is dynamic, constantly shifting and creating chaotic piles that are difficult to navigate.
At best, leads (cracks in the ice) are small enough to jump. Bigger ones require swimming.
Arctic ice near the North Pole is so thin, Larsen sometimes had to spread his weight as wide as possible to avoid breaking through it. Photo of Eric Larsen
