A babe in arms in 1935, Helena and her mother, Galina Vorobiova, pose for a portrait during the sunny times before World War II.

“Papa was the family photographer,” says Helena, whose father noted, on the back of this photograph, the month and year it was taken: July ’39. There are no photographs of the family during the war years.
