Lapland is one of the world’s few regions where most of its natural land is free for anyone to explore and enjoy. Visit in the spring side of winter, where there's no lack of snowy slopes and the days are growing longer.
Situated in northwest Lapland, Levi is Finland’s largest ski-resort. Here, the sun spills liquid-gold on the horizon, leaving snow-laden trees tipped pink.
Restaurant Kaunis’s menu offers extraordinary taste experiences ranging from traditional Lappish dishes to modern cuisine. Both local and domestic ingredients and products are utilised in the cooking: they source fish from Inari lake as well as reindeer meat from local reindeer herders.
Located atop Kaunispää Mountain in eastern Lapland, Restaurant Kaunis offers sweeping views of the surrounding wilderness and, if you're lucky, the Northern Lights during winter.
Taking a fairytale reindeer ride with the Sámi is one of the best ways to experience the Northern Hemisphere's most electrifying show. Visitors can listen to ancient stories, find out why these beautiful creatures are partial to the odd magic mushroom and learn the secret of the suopunkki (Sámi lasso). If you’re lucky, you may even be treated to a spontaneously sung joik, a rhythmic poem conjuring the spirit of the Sámi peoples’ ancestors.
It’s thought there are more than 20 billion trees in Finland, which can occasionally obscure the Northern Lights, but at other times they provide some useful framing. During lesser activity, the aurora usually appear in a single area of the sky, but during stronger instances caused by solar storms, the lights can appear to rain down. Colours, shapes and patterns all vary as particles are sucked towards the Earth by its magnetic poles and smash into our upper atmosphere, igniting the sky.
Levi and Ylläs offer three- and four-night Santa breaks where kids can visit the Elf Hideaway, meet Comet the reindeer and enjoy other festive experiences including gingerbread baking and Christmas tree decorating. Afterwards, there’s the chance to add on other excursions such as dogsledding and snowmobiling.
The Golden Crown Igloos in Levi are specially designed for viewing the Northern Lights. The glass is made of a special kind of thermal glass that keeps the inside of the igloo toasty even when the temperature outside drops to a chilly -30C.
