Construction of the Palazzo dei Priori (as it was known at the time) began in 1299 and finished in 1314. Dante was elected one of the six priors who governed Florence in 1300, a career move that later precipitated his downfall and exile.
The Taj Mahal is flanked by a mosque on the left and a jawab on the right that mirrors the mosque. The garden is divided into quadrants by two channels that lead to a pool. This central pool is equidistant from both the mausoleum and the entrance to the site.

EPIRUS: ZAGORI Travelling north along the spine of the Pindus range, you’ll eventually reach Zagori, a rugged, mountainous chunk of the Epirus region that borders Albania. The spectacular, UNESCO-listed Vikos Gorge—more than 10 miles long and roughly a half mile deep—is the main attraction, offering some of the best hiking in Europe, but the whole region is worth exploring. The landscape is cleaved by canyons and dotted with traditional stone villages and centuries-old monasteries.
