During her record-setting 328-day mission aboard the International Space Station from March 2019 to February 2020, Artemis II mission specialist Christina Koch helped contribute to hundreds of onboard science experiments.
Artemis II pilot Victor Glover spent 168 days in orbit during his mission to the International Space Station from November 2020 to May 2021, completing four spacewalks.
In August before the launch of Artemis I, the uncrewed test flight of the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft, astronauts and astronaut candidates from the U.S. and Canada gathered in front of the launchpad. Unlike Apollo, Artemis will fly non-American astronauts.
During his 2014 mission aboard the International Space Station, Artemis II commander Reid Wiseman logged almost 13 hours of spacewalks.
The volcano Maat Mons on the surface of Venus is displayed in this simulated view created from data taken by NASA's Magellan spacecraft.
Two astronaunts conduct a space walk outside the International Space Station servicing a maintainence robot.
In 2022, NASA slammed a spacecraft into the asteroid Dimorphos, a moonlet of the larger asteroid Didymos, to test whether they could knock it off its orbit. The spacecraft captured this image of Dimorphos 11 seconds before impact—which was a smashing success.
In this visualization of water on the moon, blue areas represent water ice on the lunar surface. The data, from NASA’s Moon Mineralogy Mapper, shows that most of the surface ice on the moon is concentrated near the poles.
Near the moon’s south pole, the bowl-shaped Shackleton crater is 13 miles wide and more than two miles deep. It is close to the human basecamp sites being targeted by NASA for the Artemis missions, but to effectively explore this geologically-rich crater, astronauts will need help from robots that can navigate the treacherous terrain.
