Colourised scanning electron micrograph of a patient's cells (green) heavily infected with SARS-CoV-2 virus particles (purple).
This transmission electron microscope image shows SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, isolated from a patient in the U.S. Virus particles are shown emerging from the surface of cells cultured in the lab. The spikes on the outer edge of the virus particles give coronaviruses their name, crown-like. Image captured and colorised at NIAID's Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML) in Hamilton, Montana.
Colorized scanning electron micrograph of a cell (green) undergoing self-destruction or “apoptosis” after being heavily infected with SARS-CoV-2 virus particles (yellow), isolated from a patient sample. Image captured at the NIAID Integrated Research Facility in Fort Detrick, Maryland.
