Host of the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976, Innsbruck is surrounded by skiing and snowboarding slopes. Its medieval Old Town bustles with shops and cafés, while its baroque palaces channel the long-lost Habsburg empire.
HALKIDIKI: SITHONIA Viewed from above, the three-fingered Halkidiki peninsula looks like it’s reaching into the Aegean to scoop up some soft, powdery sand. This is where Greeks from across the north flock for their summer vacations. There are miles of beaches to explore on the two fingers nearest Thessaloniki. Kassandra is the busier of the two—think thumping beach clubs and spring break–style all-inclusives—so rent a car and head to Sithonia, where you can pull to the side of the road and pitch a tent under the palms.
Peru's traditional Inti Raymi festival climaxes on June 24.
HUMBERSTONE AND SANTA LAURA, ATACAMA DESERT, CHILE Home to saltpeter mines, these two company towns in northern Chile were abandoned in 1958. The well-preserved buildings include a theatre with its original chairs, houses, a cast-iron swimming pool made from the hull of a ship, a hotel, and grocers’ shops complete with price lists. Travel tip: Humberstone and Santa Laura are close to the town of Pozo Almonte, 30 miles east of Iquique, which is the nearest city with places to stay and an airport.
