Members of the Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau tribe cross a river on a fallen tree in the sprawling Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau Indigenous Territory, in the state of Rondônia, in 2019. The reserve is home to five Indigenous groups, including three tribes living in isolation deep in the jungle. Illegal loggers, miners, and land speculators have been invading the territory. Experts believe that rising tensions contributed to the death, on September 9, 2020, of FUNAI field agent and Indigenous rights defender Rieli Franciscoti in an arrow attack inside the reserve.
