Indigenous Trans Women Find Sanctuary on Colombia’s Coffee Farms

Yuliana belongs to the ethnic group Emberá Katio and comes from the eastern Pacific region of Chocó.

Angélica is dressed for a trip to the nearby village of Santuario on a Saturday morning. Every Saturday, the women go to the village to shop with some of the money they have earned during the week. It is one of the few times they leave the farms.

Francy, a member of the ethnic group Emberá Katio, sits on the balcony of the farm building in the evening after getting dressed. She lives with her partner Dario on the coffee farm.

Even as a young child, Angélica didn't feel comfortable dressing as a boy. As a teenager, she began to dress in traditionally female clothing and transition to her true gender identity.
