When the sun shines and we clamour for the coast, our natural inclination is often to head west, or more specifically, south west, to Devon and Cornwall. But head east, to Norfolk and you’ll find an area every bit as beautiful, but with a beguiling wildness that is entirely unique.

The roads here, carving through countryside far more vertiginous you’d imagine given the proximity to the Netherlands, are often blissfully traffic-free, making them the perfect place to enjoy a Subaru SUV’s nimble handling. But it’s at one of the many coastal nature reserves where giant dunes bleed out to the North Sea and birds outnumber people by a factor of 1000 that you’ll really feel like you’ve escaped.
