Slowly. Just a little. He gradually opens his eyes. He looks around, lazily surveying the scene before him. Presumably the tree is the same and the walls are the same. The blurry shadows of people seen through dozy eyes look a bit different. But new people coming in here is normal. Everything seems in place and he closes his eyes again and drifts off. This is life for a sloth here at the Sloth Sanctuary on the coast of Costa Rica. It's a refuge for local animals that have been injured and need some gentle care. Read more

FOUR FIELDS THAT STAND FOR THE WORLD

I can’t help imagining an initial pitch to an agent or publisher.
“Right, Tim: The Running Sky was a beautiful book. How are you going to follow it?
“Well, I want to write a book about four fields.”
“What — as in grassy fields?”
“Yes, they are all grassed at the moment, as it happens…”
In The Guardian a couple of weeks ago, Stephen Moss chose Four Fields by Tim Dee as one of his nature books of the year. I think it’s going to be one of mine, too.

Over Christmas and New Year 2013 we had the pleasure of spending nearly three weeks exploring the incredible Galapagos islands. I knew the wildlife was going to be epic but being on a land-based tour meant we had more time to experience these incredible landscapes. The Galapagos, I am pleased to report, did not disappoint.
