01 Bambu Indah
A collection of beautifully restored Javanese houses hidden in lush gardens with mountain views amid the sounds of the jungle. Food straight from the veg plot is brought to long tables, a rope swings above the unchlorinated freshwater pool, and taxis ferry you into town. 'Manis', with its cushioned porch and deck, a luxurious bed and an outdoor rain shower, makes a dream billet for two. Doubles from £92. bambuindah.com

02 Cinta Inn
This intimate seven-room boutique hotel started life as the Cinta Grill Restaurant in the bright heart of Ubud: the restaurant is lively, the mojitos are legendary. Tranquil bedrooms lie off a decked courtyard with three small fountains and a lap pool; the most romantic has a private balcony, others open to the pool, perfect for a splash. Doubles from £88. cintagrill.com

03 Tegal Sari
Choose from 27 guest rooms, all with their own terrace, and you'll wake to the sound of cooing doves before enjoying the tropical gardens, a massage pavilion, fresh fruit granola breakfasts, a small restaurant and a sunny pool. It's amazingly cheap when you consider the facilities on offer, with air con and green paddy views. Doubles from £20. tegalsari-ubud.com

04 Alam Jiwa
A great little sanctuary in a small village with beautiful breakfasts and a free shuttle into town; the Monkey Forest — a kid's favourite — is a 15-minute stroll away. Serene Balinese bedrooms open on to bucolic gardens, duck ponds and a lazy pool, while the sound of the river will lull you to sleep. Doubles from £71. alamindahbali.com
