Book in to one of the new beachfront suites, whose private terraces lead to hammocks, loungers and palms. As the midday heat turns up, feast on calamari and cocktails beneath a huge thatched roof at the end of Tulum's powdery sands. Feeling energetic? 02 Playa Mambo Eco Cabanas
Luxury lies in simplicity at these eight thatched cabanas on the white sands. Expect fruit platters, grilled seafood, massages, double sun loungers, and warm, impeccable service from the family who run it. And for night owls, bars are a two-minute stroll away. Penthouse £100-£190.

03 Encantada Boutique Hotel & Spa
All eight palapa-topped suites are gorgeous: for ocean views and big breezes, pick the beachfront. Take time out with a massage and an organic tequila before wolfing down spectacular dishes of fish tacos and chicken in mole at its airy restaurant. Bikes are free to hire too. Doubles £135-£393.

04 Papaya Playa
Two big ocean-front palapas serve Mayan dishes and mojitos to a background of funk and soul music. Half-hidden in the jungle are 11 exquisite casitas, with thatched treetop terraces, rain showers and breathtaking views. From £224-£420.
