Enjoy bar facilities, free wi-fi and newspapers at this tower hotel, 20 minutes from the centre. You can breakfast at stylish sister restaurant Le Bistango, or the shopping mall opposite. This haven in beautiful Vieille Ville has a grand reception area, Nordic-inspired restaurant, spa and pool, plus a bistro where under-sixes eat for free. If you're after views, splash out on an upper-floor room. Itchy feet? Cross-country skiing, cycling trails and golf are all close by. Doubles from £85.

03 Auberge L'Autre Jardin
This three-storey, eco-friendly hotel is housed in an former industrial building just outside the city, in St Roch. Its 28 good-sized bedrooms have an African, Asian or a South American theme, breakfast is generous and mostly fair trade, there's indoor parking for bikes and free wi-fi. Doubles from £63.

04 Acacias Bed & Breakfast
This warm, bright B&B is walking distance from restaurants and cafes and a 10-minute bus ride from the Old Town. There's free parking and wi-fi plus a little back garden scented with lilac. Breakfast is a charming Continental affair with a German slant, and helpful host Marc knows the city inside out. From £55 for two.
