Bakwa Lodge is set along a secluded beach of opaline waters in a magnificent seascape. It’s home to rural plains, tropical reefs and unspoilt beaches, and is an hour-and-a-half’s flight from Mauritius. It was built by a group of friends who spotted the potential in an abandoned corner of the Var Brulé area of Rodrigues in which to create an environmentally friendly haven for travellers.

The lodge has been developed with the environment and local community in mind, and has its own water recycling plant. The garden is filled with indigenous plants that blend perfectly into the natural environment. The garden lighting is deliberately soft, and invites travellers to experience the southern night sky.

The lodge comprises of six suites and a beachfront villa. Rooms are tastefully decorated with salvaged Rodriguan artefacts, palm trunks and remnants of broken discarded fishing boats, creating a unique atmosphere.

All spacious suites feature large beds with superior cotton linen, mini bar, air conditioning, en suite bathrooms and outdoor showers along with daily housekeeping and laundry services.

This site is known for its vast lagoon where kitesurfers and windsurfers from around the world have direct beach access to launch and race along the off-shore reef. The lagoon can also be sailed with local fishermen, discovering the smaller islands or just having fun fishing and snorkelling.

For those with an adventurous spirit, the island can be discovered while roaming the routes that criss-cross it. The locals are welcoming people who are happy to guide visitors to the right trails and paths, helping them experience a little island life.

The restaurant and bar is the perfect place for a romantic candlelit dinner. The cuisine is a combination of Rodriguan delicacies and European dishes, including fresh seafood and barbecues flavoured with local herbs and spices. Any specific dietary requirements are easily catered for.

Bakwa Lodge is simple, comfortable, understated contemporary island living — it was never intended to be a hotel and it isn’t. It’s a castaway island retreat appealing to those who appreciate a return to simple luxuries that reawaken the senses.
