The View

Rounding the southeastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula and historically isolated by vast deserts in the west and the mountains along its northern coast, Oman is almost otherworldly in its beauty — as are its hotels. Here are our five best places to stay.

For city views:  The View
Perched 5,000ft above sea level, The View needs no explanation. The imposing Al Hajar Mountains coupled with a backdrop of Muscat will make jaws drops. Forty-five minutes from the ancient city of Nizwa — once a centre for trade, religion, education and art — the box-shaped cottages of The View are scattered along the southern ridge of Jebel Shams. Rooms from £186.

For desert adventures: Desert Nights Camp
Silk-like sand encircles this secluded camp in the middle of 10 acres of desert. The luxurious Bedouin-style tents of Desert Nights Camp create a sense of mystic romance for one of the finest Oman boutique hotels. Dust off your boots from a long day exploring dunes and wadis on camelback, and relax in the fully air-conditioned rooms or by the evening campfires. This boutique experience blends ancient traditions with luxury fit for royalty. Rooms from £130.

For spa lovers: Six Senses, Zighy Bay
Within the thick cobblestone walls of Six Senses at Zighy Bay in the northernmost region of Oman are some of the best spa villas in the country. Warm colours and natural light fill the rooms while unbleached cotton fibres and ergonomic pillows dress the bed. Whether you're looking for private beachfront access or in-villa spas, the village-style appeal of Six Senses gives a feeling of authenticity in a haven of relaxation. Rooms from £626.

For beaches: Al Baleed Resort, Salalah
The southern region of Oman is a tranquil spot that's perfect for a getaway. Located between a freshwater lagoon and a delicate coastline, palms proliferate the grounds and magnificent arches of traditional Moorish architecture blend heritage and modernity in this desert paradise. The master wine classes, fishing adventures in the Arabian Sea and serene beachfront are all reasons why Al Baleed Resort should be at the top of the list for accommodations in southern Oman. Rooms from £252.

For city life: The Chedi, Muscat
Facing the Gulf of Oman, the small vibrant city of Muscat is known for its exceptional architecture, evident in the Royal Opera House and Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, as well as its cliff-side roads built into the mountainous terrain. A short taxi ride north from the capital finds you in The Chedi, one of the most idyllic settings in the area. The 21-acre site is arranged with palms in a central location that's ideal for shopping in the local markets or exploring the nearby Natural History Museum. Take a dip in one of The Chedi's three swimming pools or be pampered in the Balinese spa after a long day in the city. Rooms from £294.

For longer stays: Sifawy Boutique Hotel
Northern Oman is renowned for its seafood and classic style. Just south of As Sifah is a plush marina village that encapsulates the elegance of the coast. The Sifawy Boutique Hotel is seriously swanky, offering views of the marina and fusing traditional Omani architecture with European designs. Located in the world-class Jebel Sifah Resort, Sifawy Boutique Hotel has shops, beachside restaurants and nine-hole par 36 golf course. Rooms from £106.
