After arriving at Male International Airport, guests are whisked away on a seven-mile speedboat trip to the tiny Emboodhu Finolhu Island, where they'll discover the allure of multi-award winning Taj Exotica, favoured by couples as an idyllic romantic haven.

The island rises into view from the largest natural lagoon in the Maldives with Taj Exotica sprawling over this tropical sanctuary, its 64 overwater villas strung out in an oval chain over the sparkling turquoise of the Indian Ocean.

The thatch-roofed, wood-finished villas are exquisitely decorated with local art and feature an open-air shower and deluxe bed. The villas open on to the atoll, with a sun deck, plunge pool and spectacular view of the sunrise. Guests are looked after by an attentive personal butler.

The larger villas take luxury a notch higher with a personal spa treatment room and private stretch of powder-soft white sand beach.

The cuisine provided is also impeccable. Visitors can enjoy a nibble poolside, indulge in cocktails and shisha at the Equator Lounge, choose between 300 labels from the wine cellar and lounge in the beachfront seating at 24 Degrees restaurant.

The comprehensive menu offers a taste of Pan-Asian, European and Thai food. The overwater Deep End restaurant sets the mood for romantic dining, pairing Mediterranean flavours with candlelight and the sound of the waves. Save space for the chocolatey signature desert Opera, prepared right at your table.

True romantic seclusion is guaranteed by choosing any spot on the island, which the diligent staff will turn into a private table for two under the stars. Lucky visitors could witness the incredible bioluminescent plankton in the shallows near the beach if conditions line up.

Many exciting activities are available. Snorkelling with some of the Maldives' 2,000 species of mesmerising marine species such as fish, sharks, turtles, dolphins and reef coral is incredible. There is also scuba diving, watersports, wildlife walks, seaplane rides or sunset cruises with champagne and canapés. The 24-hour speedboat service makes it easy to plan trips to the city market to soak up the local atmosphere.

For those who prefer to stay put, tranquillity beckons at the Jive Grande Spa. Holistic Ayurvedic treatments, therapies and expert massages leave clients feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

The remote beauty of Taj Exotica in the Maldives is the trip of a lifetime that will remain a fond memory for years to come.
