Spanning just over two acres in size, Drift Thelu Veliga Retreat is an untouched island that has white sandy beaches and plush vegetation. Surrounded by a turquoise lagoon, this private island is a throwback to a much simpler time. The island is located in South Ari Atoll, just 30 minutes away from Malé International Airport via seaplane.

The island features just 30 charming villas, creating a sense of exclusivity and intimacy — there are 10 beach villas and 20 water villas. Echoing the design of traditional thatched houses, Drift’s villas provide a sanctuary of organic luxury and rustic simplicity.

The retreat’s team of highly skilled chefs focus on providing delicious regional island dishes incorporating signature Asian influences. With an emphasis on exceptional ingredients and fresh seafood, sourced locally wherever possible, guests experience memorable flavours that burst with authenticity. The retreat’s restaurant offers a delicious buffet as well as a la carte options, in a stunning open-air environment that ensures guests will never forget the beautiful surroundings.

The beachfront bar provides the perfect opportunity to witness stunning Maldivian sunsets. Offering light meals and snacks throughout the day, it’s the perfect spot for a quick break, a refreshing cocktail and a chance to mingle with other guests.

Over at one end of the island is a serene overwater spa. A carefully selected menu combines massage treatments from Indonesia, Thailand and India, and enriching facials and stimulating body treatments, all carried out by expert therapists.

For those looking for proper adventure, take to the waves and enjoy big-game fishing or watersports. Or go on one of Drift’s selection of bespoke experiences — such as a sandbank picnic for two. South Ari Atoll is also home to some of the best diving and whale shark spotting areas in the world.

Known for its outstanding, unspoiled natural beauty and marine life, the island is just over 50 miles south west of the Maldivian capital of Malé. And the resort has an arrival guests won’t forget — a stunning 35-minute seaplane ride.
